Making a Difference Through Volunteering

As the world economy struggles to regain it’s footing, and populations all over the planet begin to revolt, demanding humane treatment, we become more acutely aware of the madness that surrounds us in our daily lives. It’s no wonder that so many people are beginning question their value systems and those of their governments. While it is easy to find reasons to get angry, and be discontented with the current state of affairs, there is a growing population of people who have become committed to providing solutions, rather than simply lamenting the problems.

As miserable as we may feel in our daily lives, it is a sobering moment to realize that our worst day, is often better than the best day of many of our planet’s population. For some, this realization only hardens the heart, but for others, it melts it. For those that recognize the bottomless need for people with helpful skills, patience and a big heart, this is often a turning point.

They begin to realize how easy it is to improve the lives of those less fortunate. The good news is that there are plenty of Aid organizations out there that match skill-sets with populations that need them, and as a result the world of volunteer labour is growing by leaps and bounds.

Central America for instance, has tremendous need for those with expertise in agriculture, medicine, biology, education and more, due to the pressures national governments all over the world are facing. With austerity measures firmly in place to mitigate debt, government services are suffering. Those with skills in the medical field and agriculture are encouraged to volunteer in Guatemala where health care services for the poor are dwindling and resources for agriculture are being stretched thin. And due to recent natural disasters such as flooding, those with expertise in the construction field are encouraged to volunteer in Costa Rica. Their skills are put to use strengthening and repairing facilities and homes weakened and damaged by heavy rains and flooding. There has never been a greater need for people with valuable skills, patience, and heart. Now is the time to put those amazing human resources to good use. Consider becoming a volunteer today!

Jobs in cna and caregiver jobs are great for people who love working for people and helping them. Summer positions for students trying to save up for college are always available and there are also many volunteer options for this type of work. Many schools and colleges require their students to do a certain amount of service to their community. This can be anything from cutting someone’s grass to doing this type of work. You can work in a home for older people or for people with disabilities, or you can work in hospitals with people who are very sick. They may not need help as far as getting things done, but they might just want someone to talk to.

There are many little kids who are sick with cancer and other things and do not know how much longer they will live. It is very sad because they are only very little and many children their age are playing and using their imaginations while these little ones have to mature very fast and face reality at a very young age.

Although it does not seem like much, simply visiting them a few times a week, bringing them gifts, giving them hope, and being there for them through the hard time will mean so much to them. You can also comfort their families in their time of struggle. If the family is in financial trouble because of the illness that caused them to have to lose a lot of their savings, you could come up with a fundraiser and the family would greatly appreciate it.

If you love taking care of people, it should not matter to you whether you get paid for your time and effort or not. If it is something that you absolutely love then it could be a great thing to make a career out of. There are certain things, however, that you cannot get paid for. If you like working with sick people, you could try becoming a nurse, but if you just want to be there for a family who has a sick loved one, then volunteering your time on your own time would be better for volunteering, you cannot charge a family for your services for that because they are usually in enough financial trouble as it is.

There are not just sick ones who need help, moms love having helpers and babysitters who can watch their little ones while they cook meals, do laundry, or other housework that needs to get done. It is a great for someone who is younger, about the age of fourteen, who wants to earn some extra money.

Whether you are volunteering, make the best of it, or working in the summer as a student, your services are needed all over the place. There are many career options in the care giving field because many people need your help. They are either old and cannot get out of their homes as often as they would like or they are sick and need some hope and encouragement and you can give that to them.
