What is Volunteer Working?

What is Volunteer Working?

Whenever it comes to volunteer some work to someone it is not at all an easy task to be carried out. There are very few people on earth nowadays who are ready to serve humanity or their fellow men. It is not due to the fact that people are not sensitive but it is because people these days are too much engaged in to their day to day activities that they hardy get time to spend with their family members. Thus, how they can get time to volunteer themselves for some noble cause or human race.

We are well familiar with the term volunteering but at the same time there are a number of people who do not know what volunteer work is? It means to work for others without any greed or being selfish. These kinds of activities are carried out in order to promote and ensure better quality and standards of life.

It is worth mentioning here that these volunteer activities are not done for the human beings only. These can be carried out for the betterment of the society, eco system, animals, environment as well as other organisms that are a part of the earth. Keeping in view all this, it will not be wrong to say that volunteering has a broad spectrum with unlimited scope. Volunteering can be for oneself as well. When one finds ways to enhance one’s skills to improve performance at work place, it is also volunteering.

Volunteering can be done at national as well as international level including overseas volunteering. But the meaning of volunteer work or volunteering will not change either it is volunteering abroad or at home level. Over all this can be called an activity that is done free of cost and that has nothing to do with self centeredness.

When you announce yourself as a volunteer then no doubt you are trained to cope up with various situations that you may come across. You along with other volunteers will be trained professionally for a number of fields like medicine, education and rescuing etcetera. In situation where you may have to fight fire, you need to know certain set of skills to meet the emergency situation. So for such phase, volunteers are also taught how to build sheds with the available things around. In case you are a volunteer abroad then you will only be called when there are certain situations like natural disasters. Sometimes countries facing natural calamities also ask to send only selective volunteers and it is due to this fact why it is usually said that overseas volunteering is not meant for everyone. When it comes to sign up overseas volunteering, then one needs to take care of certain things that include language spoken there, life style, weather conditions, geographical details of the region you are going to and so on. Thus, if you decide for the overseas volunteer thus make it clear that you get volunteer travel as well. You will visit various countries and will explore other parts of the world in addition to your own country.

Chicago Roofing Contractors Going Green

Chicago Roofing Contractors Going Green

Long before when man understood the importance of roofing, they had a simple thatch from vegetation. Straw, seaweed, clay, earth etc were the materials mainly used for the construction of roofing. Now the most popular are the shingles and tiles, where the roofing material are made more durable, fire resistant, weather friendly etc. With the use of expertise from roofing contractors in Chicago, one can adorn a beautiful roof, above the building.

Centuries before, in many Asian countries bamboo, coconut tree leaves and the bark of certain trees was used. The bamboo was used for the structure of the building and the outer layer. The bamboo stems are split and turned alternatively and placed on the top. The thick bark of certain trees are peeled off and placed on the roof in some places. Even now people living in developing and under developed countries often build a roof above their heads, with simple organic or bio – based materials.

The new roofing materials, which also include synthetic materials, may be of good to the consumers, in the angle of protection and durability, but it may cause environmental hazards.

The governments as well as the business professionals are coming out with the green initiation. The world now is completely aware of the seriousness of increased pollution and global warming and hence the demand for organic roofing is also on the rise.

The building and construction authorities in Chicago want to have a greener way to continue their business. On June 6th 2001, a new energy code – Amendment of Title 18 f Municipal Code of Chicago Concerning Energy Efficient Requirements, was passed.

Some of the features included in the new code are:

New requirements for roof, ceiling and wall insulation.

The building plan must be certified by a registered energy professional.

Insulation requirements must be approved by CRCA (Chicago Roofing Contractors Association) and NRCA.

An innovative biological product called the Clean and Green Roofing Solution has been developed by Johns Manville, a Berkshire Hathaway company and Green products LLC. Clean and Green roofing Solution is a white sealant derived from soya bean.

Chicago based U.S Equities Realty, a facility management company wanted a replacement for it’s worn out traditional black asphalt – covered rooftop. After much research they decided on the Clean and Green Roofing solution, an organic rooftop. This new roofing material is surprisingly non – toxic, flame resistant, water – proofed and has high reflectivity. The specialty is that it is able to lower the inside and the outside temperature of the building.

The cooler the temperature less would be the demand on the air conditioners. This in turn reduces the usage of electricity, and there by saving the resources.

Johns Manville’s JMCleanBond roofing system is also combined with Environmental Liquid membrane System (ELMS) of Green Products LLC to a single roofing system with the benefits of both the materials. John Manville’s JMCleanBond SBS fire resistant roofing membrane does not need any kind of heat or solvent based adhesives for installation, which makes it a non energy consuming substance.

Environmental Liquid membrane System (ELMS) is a USDA certified biological soy polymer membrane. It is completely water proof so it could be used in areas of buildings where there may be pooling of water.

The first roofing contractors association which was in Chicago dates back to 1870’s. The great Chicago fire in 1871 caused disastrous effect to people and their homes. After the fire, there were huge demand for re – constructing roofs for houses and other business enterprises and weren’t many genuine experts who could build roofs within short periods.

M.W Powell initiated other experts to join together and help re – build the roofs. M.W Powell and other experts pooled all the resources such as man power, equipment and materials and met the high demand of roofing for the people of Chicago. After this incident, the need and importance for strong and professional roofers was understood. This formed the building blocks of today’s Roofing contractors association all over the Unites States.

Some of the features of Chicago Roofing Contractors association are:

Imposing standard in the quality.
Develop new and strong roofing systems.
Elimination of contractor’s who come below the stipulated standard.
Training and Education of Roofing employees.

Volunteering abroad: fitness first

Volunteering abroad: fitness first

A major concern for many volunteers abroad is that they may fail to keep fit while they are in a foreign country; a lot of concerns come into focus in a different environment, top of the list being climate change. Once a person is used to exercising and keeping fit in a new climate, it takes a while for a person to get acclimatized in a new place that has different weather patterns that they have gotten used to. With regard to the climate change, your best weapon is timing, coupled with starting your exercise routine in small/ shorter bits, this means if you come from a place where the weather is a bit cold, then the best time for you to exercise in a tropical area would be early in the morning, similarly the best time for someone from a tropical country to exercise would be in the late afternoon. With this in mind here are a couple of ideas that can help you keep fit while volunteering abroad.

The first and simplest way to keep fit is to take a short run or walk around your area of residence while you are volunteering, this can be a simple short 15 to 20 minute run or walk.

Be sure to talk to your host or any locals you are familiar with to help you with directions or a map if possible, also try and find out if there is a good and safe area around your residence where you can have your run without any risks.

Swimming regularly is another good way to keep fit. This helps in building endurance, muscle strength and cardio-vascular fitness. You can also use swimming simply as a warm up session before you get into your more rigorous exercises, this is one way but another good use of swimming can come After a land workout a few laps in the pool can help you cool-down, and it moves blood through your muscles to help them recover.

Research is your best tool when travelling abroad, if you like running, find out the best trails to do so, along the same line if you are used to keeping fit through aerobics, then you need to find out where the best fitness gyms are located in the area where you are residing during your volunteer experience, bear in mind that you may not necessarily find an aerobics routine that is the same as that you are used to at home, so it will help you to speak to the locals and any aerobics instructors you come into contact with to find an aerobics class that is most similar to what  you are used to, doing what your body is already familiar with is much easier than starting up with a whole new workout routine.

One thing you need to remember when going abroad for a period of time to be spent volunteering, is not to be afraid of carrying your workout gear, it may add a few pounds to your luggage but it is worth it, your body produces endorphins from a good work out, this will help you keep your stress levels down while at the same time making sure you are not worse off in fitness by the time you get back home

Finally, try and have fun as well with your work out, the point is to keep fit and stress free, so  you can invite your friends and some of the locals to join you, this will help keep you motivated and act as a way of staying with your work out to the end
